  • Newtown CT Tragedy

Posted by Dr. JAMES HARRYMAN, PhD, LPC, NBCC. at 12/17/2012 8:00:00 AM
In light of the tragic events in Newtown, CT last Friday, I wanted to take the opportunity to express, from a school counselor's point of view, the understood sadness all educators must feel this morning as they greet students to their classroom across our great country.  Teachers and students regularly go "through the motions" of fire drills, tornado drills, earthquake drills, intruder alert drills, never imagining such an event would take place at the school they attend.  This were surely the case in Newtown, CT as well.  Children and teachers going about the tasks of what students and teachers do: learn and teach, never imagining they would be the targets of someone's darkness.  We as educators and students must remain vigilant and aware but at the same time not allowing ourselves to become overly expectant of such madness.  When we become overly expectant we allow monsters who have no thought of others to control our daily lives.  This we must never do.  We must protect one another and consider at all times the safety of those who we call colleagues; each other.

  • Scholarship Applications

Posted by Dr. JAMES HARRYMAN, PhD, LPC, NBCC. at 12/12/2012 9:00:00 AM

The 2012-2013 school year is half over.  Seniors busying themselves with college and technical school applications will next begin the arduous task of completing applications for financial aid and scholarships.  Career Center sponsored scholarships are listed on my "Scholarship" page as well as on the bulletin board down from my office where applications will also be available beginning January 3rd.  Just a few tips to help you be the student selected to receive that much needed scholarship $$.

    1.  Pick up an application...You can't be chosen if you don't apply.  Many times there's only one student who makes application.  If so....it's their's.
    2.  Complete every item of the application.  If there is an item which doesn't apply to you, place N/A in the blank provided.
    3.  Pick up two copies of the application.  Fill out the first in pencil as a rough draft then correct any mistakes and type the second.  A sharp, typed application draws the attention of those making the decisions regarding who receives it.
    4.  Be prompt.  Turn in the application to Dr. Harryman early if you can.  For sure turn it in by the deadline to assure it makes it to the individuals who make the decision regarding who receives it.
    5.  Don't assume you won't make the cut thus not considering applying.

These are simple things to consider and take little time when considering they may be worth $500 to $1,000 dollars of much needed monies when attending education following high school.

  • Busy Quarter

Posted by Dr. JAMES HARRYMAN, PhD, LPC, NBCC. at 12/4/2012 10:00:00 AM
This quarter I've been staying busy assisting seniors as they complete applications for college and get their Compass scores up to par with what the school they plan on attending requires.  Many students go in approach the Compass having never taken a test similar.  Their scores may not be what they would like and they have to take it again.  I've seen some jump 30 points once they know what to expect from the test items.  I encourage you to complete applications in a rough draft form then "type" it before you send it off.  This goes for scholarship applications as well.  It shows you are concerned enough to make it look as best you can.  I have a typewriter in my office.  I'll be glad to let you use it or to type it for you once the application is completed.  Enjoy the rest of the 1st semester.

  • Dr. Harryman Publishes Calendar Books

Posted by Dr. JAMES HARRYMAN, PhD, LPC, NBCC. at 11/9/2012 2:00:00 AM
In 1990 Jim Harryman published his first novel, "Reflections" through the support of several friends who could see the same dream he envisioned.  Then in 1994 he published his second novel, "The Michelle Syndrome".  Over the next 20 years 5 more novels were published along with several poems and articles.  Finally in 2013 Dr. Jim Harryman saw 10 long years of work come to fruition when his Calendar Book series was published as a 5 book series.  With the advances in technology over the span of Harryman's writing career, on-line publishing finally caught up with his desire to complete the project.  In October of this year "A Man's Daily Guide to Success" was released as a 6x9 hardcover edition as a calendar book which can be used year after year (there are no days of the week, only pages with months and dates).  Springing from Harryman's 30 years of experiences as a student of life, education and daily interactions with people as a high school English teacher, high school counselor and psychotherapist, each daily reading is intended to spark in the reader a desire and motivation for a more fulfilling life and successful career.

Then in late October "A Woman's Daily Guide to Success", "A Graduate's Daily Guide to Success", "A Teacher's Daily Guide to Success" and "A Counselor's Daily Guide to Success" found their way into the market.  Each calendar book is designed especially for its intended reader and is available in 6x9 hardback or paperback editions.  Books can be previewed and purchased at:

  • Dr. Harryman Attends State Conference

Posted by Dr. JAMES HARRYMAN, PhD, LPC, NBCC. at 11/7/2012 9:00:00 AM
November 3rd through 6th the Missouri School Counselor's Association (MSCA) held their 64th annual fall conference at Tantara Resort, Lake of the Ozarks.  Having attended the past 15 years, I found this year's conference to be especially electric.  As I looked over the more than 2500 Missouri school counselors the night of the keynote address it was obvious why;  the faces are younger and brighter (meaning more excited) than in years past.  I am now one of the "old timers" in the crowd.  The excitement was refreshing.

This year's theme,  "Missouri School Counselors:  Providing Apps for Life" provided an array of seminars/workshops for school counselor to motivate, support and enhance their daily jobs working with Missouri's youth.  One specific workshop which always provides a wealth of information is the level sharing seminar where career center counselors. vocational resource educators and placement coordinators meet to discuss and catch up on issues which they alone are faced with in their area of career education.  The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education stopped by as well to update career counselors on the issues facing vocational education from their stance.  Enlightening information.

As well the much needed respite in a relaxing lake setting  gives school counselors the boost they need to return to their respective schools and meet the needs of their colleagues and students.  Thanks Perry District #32 for allowing me the opportunity to gain this great professional development each year.

  • 8th Grade CSI (Career Search Investigation 2012-2013

Posted by Dr. JAMES HARRYMAN, PhD, LPC, NBCC. at 10/10/2012 2:00:00 PM
    6 Area School's Participate
On Wednesday and Thursday, October 17 and 18th, close to 500 8th graders from the Perry/Ste. Genevieve/Bollinger tri-county area will converge on the Career Center Complex for 8th Grade CSI (Career Search Investigation) 2012-2013.  Currently I'm completing schedules for 8th graders from Ste. Genevieve Middle School, Perryville Middle School, Meadow Heights Middle School, Valle Catholic Middle School, Altenburg Public Schools, United in Christ Lutheran School and Immanuel Lutheran School.  As the date nears the preparations finalize for two days of career exploration as area students spend 30 minutes in three programs they have selected to learn more about what the occupations duties consist of.  All of our programs are represented including Digital Media which students are bussed to as well.  We find these types of personal interactions solidify young people's connections with what Career Technical Education is about as they begin to think more seriously about where the future will find them as an adult member of the American workforce.  The event begins each day at 9:00am in the Career Center Multi-Purpose Room with a brief orientation and concludes by 11:00  for am programs and then begins again at noon until 2::00 for pm programs.  Drop by and see what we're about.  We'll be happy to have you.

  • Welcome Back

Posted by Dr. JAMES HARRYMAN, PhD, LPC, NBCC. at 8/15/2012 1:00:00 PM
Students...welcome back to the Perryville Area Career and Technology Center for the 2012-2013 school year.  I'm excited about working with you this year as 2nd year students complete your 2 year technical training programs and as 1st year students begin yours.  The school year will be busy with not only the skills you gain through your career education programs, but as well in the modeling you provide through interaction with other students as they visit the Career Center for 8th Grade CSI (Career Search Investigation) in October and Sophomore CSI (Career Search Investigation) in February, 4th Grade Adventure Tours in May and shadow days throughout the school year.

Our enrollment is up by almost 100 students this year.  The programs in most demand are Computer Maintenance/Electronics, Early Childhood Professionals, Health Occupations and Welding Technology; certainly a sign of the times.  Although our HVAC program had no enrollment this year we're anticipating revamping the curriculum and hopefully within the next two years instituting a similar program which students will be drawn to as a lucrative career path.

Enjoy your school year and stop by my office if you need anything.  My door is usually open.

  • Now What? The Young Person's Guide/Careers

    by Anthony Spadafore Careers
"The impolite truth nobody mentions in college commencement speeches: "Many of you have just spent four years and a small fortune studying something you will never use, and, if you do, you won't like all that much. Have a nice life." Up until now, you've had to rely on hit-and-miss methods of picking your career that lead to only 30 percent of college graduates reporting satisfaction with their careers.

That's because up until now there has never been a book that guides you through the difficult process of designing a career that gives you the best chance for both high-level success and satisfaction. But career guru Nicholas Lore has found a way" (Amazon.com).
