Work Policy

In fifth grade, homework is not assigned.  Assigned class work becomes work they must take home to complete is not finished.  This work is expected to be returned the next day.  Students are usually given time to work on daily assignments during the subject area that it is assigned.  If they complete assignments they may either read or work on another subject they have not completed.  Students will be given due dates for special projects or long term assignments.  This due date will be in their planner and on the project scoring guide.  It can also be found on the SIS Grading System.

Each student is responsible for filling out his/her planner each day.  There is time during each subject area to fill out their planner.  At the end of each day a review of daily assignments are listed on a chart in the front of the room.  This will give your child an opportunity to double check any work that may have been assigned during the day. Parents are asked to check each night to make sure all daily assignments are complete.  PLEASE SIGN THE PLANNER each night so that I know you are aware of assignments that were given.  Your child will be receiving a grade for correctly filling out their daily planner; your signature is part of this grade.  It is your child’s responsibility to bring you the planner for your signature.

To view your child’s current grades, lunch account information, nurse visits, daily homework, discipline issues, attendance, fines and other areas of interest, you may want to enroll in our online SIS Grading System.  When you enroll you will receive a password to your child’s information only.  Once you are enrolled you can then visit our school website and click on the parent link called SISk12 for access.

At the beginning of each quarter, the students in my class will be given a set of class work coupons.  (one per subject)  If a child forgets work or does not complete work on time, a coupon may be used to allow an additional day to complete and turn in assignments.  After the coupon is used during that quarter, the next incomplete or missing assignment will result in a late work notice.  This notice needs to be signed by parent/guardian and returned to school with competed work by the listed due date.  Failure to do so will result in Saturday School.  If there is a work issue, I will communicate this either through the daily planner or if it becomes a chronic problem I will be contacting you personally.

Behavior Chart/Consequences/Rewards

Miss Lohmann and Mrs. Buchheit will be using a clipboard behavior chart to monitor your child’s behavior throughout the day. This chart allows communication between the two classroom teacher. See sample below...

John Doe      1   2  3  4  5  (Each day of the week)

Step 1 is a warning for the student.
Step 2 will result in loss of some recess time.

Step 3 is a move to isolation in the classroom.

Step 4 will result in afterschool detention.

Step 5 will result in a referral to the office.

When a student gets to Step 3 or beyond, I will be contacting parents/guardians in order for us to work together to solve these behavioral concerns.  I will start by either sending an email, a note home or a note in the planner.  This note needs to be signed and returned to me so that I know you are aware of the behavior.  However, if the behavior is severe I will be contacting you by phone to let you know what has occurred. The first month of school is a “learning” time for both the students and the teachers.  Don’t be
surprised if your child comes home telling you he/she received one or two steps that day.
As teachers learn student’s personalities, students learn what behaviors are acceptable and which ones are not.  Disruptive behaviors that continue will always be brought to your attention.
Students who receive no more that two steps during a week earn a reward coupon.

Spelling:  A weekly list will be sent home on the first day of each week.  This list will consist of 20-25 words correlated to the unit in our reading series.  We will work with these words daily.  Tests will be given on the last day of the week.

Writing:  We will begin each writing lesson with a fun, thought-provoking journal prompt.  Mini lessons will be taught covering writing skills.  Students will then work on their individual writings, stories, or poetry during Writers’ Workshop.

Reading:  Whole group reading, classroom literature circles, three-ring circus, small group reading, shared reading, book clubs and partner reading are just a few of the ways your child will be enjoying his/her reading time this year.  Many skills will be taught and reviewed during our reading lessons.  Each child is a unique individual and I will try to introduce many different strategies to make you child the best reader possible.  Also during reading time students will get the opportunity to do centers or as I call it “Station Rotation”.  Skills covering all subject areas will be reviewed.

Math:  Mrs. Buchheit will be your child’s math teacher.  She will be reviewing basic facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, fractions and decimals.  She will expand your child’s math knowledge with geometry, tricks on how to solve word problems, along with making and reading graphs.

Science:  Many hands on activities covering the scientific method are in store for you child this year in science.  Working and constructing simple machines, classification of plants and animals, weather and water cycle, and the solar system are just a few of the skills taught in fifth grade.

Social Studies:  Looking at and studying land formations, reading and creating maps, and learning about the history of America are just a few concepts we will be covering in social studies this year.

Absences

If your child is absent, please call the office.  If you would like work to be sent to the office to be picked up, please let the office secretaries know as early as possible.  Work will be sent to the office be at least 1:30 p.m.  Students who are absent are given three days to complete work and return it to the teacher.  It is the responsibility of the student to ask any questions they may have about work they have missed.
