Mr. Arthur D. Bond

Mr. Arthur D. Bond, class of 1920, had an impressive career both scholastically and athletically at Perryville High School and in his post-secondary education.

During his high school career, Mr. Bond was captain of the Perryville High School football team in 1918 and 1919, as well as participating on the Tuba staff, in the History Club and was a member of the track team.

Following his high school graduation, Mr. Bond went on to attend the University of Missouri, Columbia, where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1925. Because of his outstanding scholastic and athletic achievements, he was chosen that year to be a Rhodes Scholar. In 1928 he graduated from Oxford University, Oxford, England, with a degree in jurisprudence. He also attended the University of Illinois for one year.

Mr. Bond was an outstanding athlete at UMC where he was a member of the 1922-24 football teams and was captain in 1924. He also lettered in track as a hurdler and sprinter. For two years, he was all-star halfback for the Missouri Valley team and was an honorable mention All-American team member.

Mr. Bond was a member of the Phi Delta Theta social fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa honorary, Blue Key, an honorary UMC service organization, and the state bar association. He was an active member of UMC alumni organizations.
Mr. Bond retired in April 1967 from the A.P. Green Refractories Co., with which he had been associated with since 1928 when he began in the sales department. From 1937-1942 he was in the export department.

He became a vice-president of the company in 1939 and after 1942 was director of foreign sales. In 1945 he was elevated to director of foreign subsidiaries and after 1947 Mr. Bond directed the international division of the A.P. Green Company. He had been a member of the Green Company Board of Directors since 1932.

Mr. Bond was appointed by Gov. Forrest Smith in 1949 to the State Board of Training Schools. He served three terms in the 1940s as a member and president of the Missouri Association of Fairs and Agricultural Expositions. He was a colonel on the staff of Gov. Forrest C. Donnell; was a member of the World Trade Advisory Commission and the International Relations Committee of the National Association of Manufacturers.

Mr. Bond was born in Perryville, Missouri, on March 4, 1902 to Samuel and Ida Doerr Bond. He was married in 1930 to Elizabeth Carlyle Green of Mexico, Missouri. He and Mrs. Bond had two children, Senator Christopher "Kit" Bond and Arthur D. Bond, Jr.

Mr. Bond died in June, 1983, at the age of 81.

Mrs. Bernice (nee Bock) Bunkowske

Mrs. Bernice (nee Bock) Bunkowske

Mrs. Bernice (nee Bock) Bunkowske, class of 1956, has dedicated most of her life to mission and volunteer work both in the United States and abroad. Much of her overseas mission work included working with women in Hong Kong, China, Thailand, India, Nigeria, Kenya and Guatemala.

After graduating from Perryville High School, she attended Concordia Teacher’s College in River Forest, Illinois, from 1956-60. She served from 1960 to 1980 with her missionary husband, Dr. Eugene W. Bunkowske, in Nigeria. During that time, she worked from 1974 to 1980 as secretary for United Bible Societies.

From 1980 to 1982 she served with her missionary husband, Gene, in Kenya and returned to serve in the United States at Concordia Seminary in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, in 1982.

In 1984 Bernice graduated with a BA and teacher diploma from Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Illinois. In 2002, Bernice and Gene moved to Minnesota where Gene teaches at Concordia University and Bernice continues as a church and community volunteer. Throughout the years, Bernice has served as a volunteer to the following organizations:
American Bible Society, distributing Bibles in Africa and the United States;
Lutheran Women’s Missionary League Christian Outreach Committee:|
a. visiting missionary women in Hong Kong, China, and Thailand;
b. preparing a video "Freely Received, Freely Give"
c. co-author and narrator of a book Dreams Dawn in Africa
Leading women in retreats and seminars in India, Nigeria and Guatemala
Serving as a Sunday School speaker in congregations throughout the U.S.
Board member of the following organizations:
a. Board for Human Care, Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Ft. Wayne
b. Lutheran Society of Missiology
c. Lutheran Bible Translators

In addition to her mission and volunteer work, Mrs. Bunkowske is the mother of four children: Barbara, Nancy, Walter and Joel, and grandmother of 11 grandchildren.

Dr. Randy Brown

Dr. Randy Brown, class of 1982, is on staff at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, as a cardiac and vascular surgeon. After graduating from Perryville High School, Dr. Brown completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City with a B.A. in Biology.

He completed his medical school training at the UM-KC School of Medicine in 1988. Dr. Brown’s Surgical Internship was completed at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Tulsa in June 1989. His General Surgery Residency was completed at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Tulsa from 1989 to 1993 and he completed his Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency at the University of Southern California from 1993 to 1996.

Dr. Brown is currently on staff with the Cardiac & Vascular Surgeons of Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Prior to that, Dr. Brown was in practice with Cardiac & Vascular Surgeons, P.C. in Cape Girardeau and with Cardiovascular Surgery, Inc. in Kansas City, Missouri.

Dr. Brown’s medical memberships include the Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Missouri State Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Cape Girardeau County Area Medical Society, the Frank A. Clingan Society at the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa, the U.M.K.C. School of Medicine Alumni Association and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

Dr. Brown’s academic appointments, honors and awards include: appointed to the editorial board for the Medical Student journal; appointed to the Medical Student Advisory Board for the Medical Student journal; member of the U.M.K.C. School of Medicine "Little Snake" Unit Academic Award; member of the U.M.K.C. School of Medicine "Snake" Unit Academic Award; and Dean’s List Scholar.

He currently serves on the Cardiovascular Services Committee, Multidisciplinary Special Care Committee, Heart Multidisciplinary Marketing Strategic Planning Committee, and the Chest Pain Center Steering Committee.

Dr. Brown has made numerous presentations to the medical community on the treatments and trends in cardiovascular surgery. He was also featured in a recent Vim & Vigor magazine in the article, "Heart Surgery Without Missing a Beat." The article told of the increasing practice to perform off-pump cardiac bypass, beating-heart surgery, a procedure that Dr. Brown and his associates at Southeast Missouri Hospital perform approximately 60 percent of the time.

Dr. Brown’s civic involvements include the Southeast Missouri Hospital Foundation, Board of Elders at the St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau, the Southeast Missouri University Booster Club, multiple medical presentations and lectures to local middle school and high school students, and a medical mission trip to the Philippines in 1988.

Dr. Brown is the son of Ray and Gloria (Feltz) Brown of Perryville and the grandson of Reeva Feltz and the late Ivan Feltz and the late Jack and Uva Brown. His wife, Dr. Twila Brown, is a Professor of Nursing at Southeast Missouri State University. They have three daughters: Taylor, age 14, Cortney, age 12, and Afton, age 8.
