  • New PCMS schedule increases instructional time

Students return to class tomorrow at Perry County Middle School, where they’ll dive back into reading, history and math lessons. Their teachers and administrators also spend the summer focusing on math — and it’s resulted in increased instructional time for students by implementing a new daily schedule. “The new schedule at the Perry County Middle School gained an additional 18 minutes of instructional time every day over the previous year’s schedule,” said Principal Milt Wick. “At first glance this gain my not look very significant, but when you look at this over the course of a 170-day school calendar, each teacher gained over 11 hours of instructional time. Ideally, increasing instructional time helps students achieve a deeper understanding of subject matter and gain more opportunities to practice with key concepts.”

  • Watch D.O.G.S welcomed to campus

Watch D.O.G.S is a national K-12 program that welcomes positive male role models — dads, grandpas, uncles and older brothers, and other father-figures — into schools. The program is being implemented now at Perry County Middle School, and will kick off at Perryville Elementary School in December. The male volunteers are called WatchDOGS, and they volunteer for at least one day each year at an official WATCH D.O.G.S. school.
